Osmosis

At a recent coffee date with some friends, I noticed one of them was absolutely fit. As typical when I notice a friend has lost weight or built muscle, I began quizzing her about what she had done. What was she eating? How many days a week did she exercise? For how long? And what exercises did she do?

My other friend asked me if I was planning on starting a new weight loss or fitness plan. "Well, not exactly," I honestly explained. "I always get the information when I see someone who has a plan that works, but then I just go home and sit on the couch like usual. Surprisingly," I joked, "I haven't lost any weight."

"Sounds like you're trying to lose by osmosis." she said. That may be a loose use of the definition of osmosis, but she's right. I have all the information and know what I need to do, but I just don't do it.

I'm not alone. Lots of folks try Christianity by osmosis. They may read Christian blogs, or visit church, or even read the Bible on occasion. They have all the information and know what they need to do, but they just don't do it.

Matthew 7:21 says "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.'"

Knowing what to do isn't enough in either weight loss or Christianity. We have to do it. That's when we see results.

Are you losing, or are you just lost?

Kelly,

Powerful and true message. I like the analogy you used. I'm blessed by the reading of blog messages and every now and then one POPS out hard at me and I then also share it on FB. Yours is simplistically powerful and I love it! I'll share it today.

Love you and may our faith not be by osmosis!

Kelly,

If we lived out what we know how different all of our lives would be in every area of our life. I need to step it up in many places.

Excellent analogy. This was one of your best devos — concise and spot on. You should submit it.

I'm with you on the exercising and diet thing. I know a lot about both, but I just don't put it into practice very well!

Here's praying for an energetic, joy-filled faith journey.

Kelly, this reminds me of a big fruit bowl that sits on my island. For the longest time I'd go to the grocery store and buy all manner of good fruit and put it in the bowl. One day I was in the store thinking about how healthy I was becoming when it occurred to me. My husband was eating all that fruit. I bought it, put it in the bowl, admired it, but I wasn't actually eating the stuff and therefore wasn't getting any of the benefit from it.

There are lots of folks who also think that Christianity is absorbed from parents (and parents who think their children should absorb their Christianity from them!).

You can lead them to the Living Water, but you can't make them take it in! May our wellsprings be full, and may those around us know the power of the One who can also make their wellsprings filled to overflowing.

Kelly,

What a great, get to the point message! I have my faith in Jesus because of what I do and believe. Now if weight loss were only as easy!

Loved this, Kelly!
It isn't enough to have the information. How true.
Reminds me of the story of a guy who was disappointed with his lack of fitness after spending hundreds on a gym membership. Didn't realize he actually had to GO TO THE GYM!!!

So thankful that after 18 years of having the information, I finally found out what I had to do. So thankful the God kept pursuing me!

Great message Kelly. I know some people who think that because they go to Church or the gym that that is all it takes. The other day I saw a girl talking on the phone in the gym for over a half hour. The only workout she was getting was her jaw. :)

So true. So true. I've done that myself, a few times :(

Hi Kelly,

Sad, but so true. Jesus is interested in us personally, so osmosis for a relationship with Him won't work any more than an osmosis-type relationship with our husbands. Can you imagine?

Great post!

P.S. LOVED your proposal critique over at Mary DeMuth's. Excellent! I'm so sorry about that stinky copyright laws. :(

Just live it!

Your devotions are always right on-and short enough to keep everyone's attention, but deep enough for everyone to get a drink.

Right to the point and was really great! I need to take lessons from you on how to write a powerful devo that isn't so wordy.

Just found your blog after visiting Sharon at Joy In the Truth, and I'm glad I did.

Well if I'm going to get it wrong at one of them, I'm glad it's the weight loss/fitness routine. :)

Your writing is getting better Kelly. Not that it wasn't already good, but I have noticed a new level of growth lately. Good for you!

An exceptional analogy. And a proper use of poetic license on the definition.
