Well, after that I got an email (not a comment friends, a real live email!) from Linda at 2nd Cup who had read my comment on Pam's blog and strongly encouraged me to rent Season 1 on DVD and just try it. Talk about peer pressure. She was sure if I tried it, I'd like it. (Sounds like something a mother says to her kids about veggies to me!)
Next, for fun, I undated my Facebook status to say "I don't watch LOST." Suddenly I started receiving responses from all my friends. "Get the DVDs" "I'll loan your the DVDs." It was like I had a serious problem here. I realized...the LOST people need for the people who haven't found LOST to find LOST or else they'll be lost. I've never seen anyone so concerned about LOST people...well, except Jesus.
In Luke 15:4-7, Jesus says, "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."
Read verse 7 again. "there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." Jesus came for the lost.
You LOST people can try and convert all of us who don't watch the show. As for me, I'm going to try to convert the lost people. Just like Jesus.
(However, if you'd like to talk about American Idol, The Mentalist, or House, I am available). *grin*
Matthew 18:14 -- In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.
Luke 15:10 -- There is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
Luke 19:10 -- For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

I've never seen LOST, in fact I'll go one step further and say we don't even have cable or watch "tv". LOL. Yes we have a tv for watching movies or playing games but we don't watch tv. That's a post all in itself. I like this post about finding the lost for Jesus!

I had a feeling you were going this route! Another angle on this is that our badgering you probably gives you a taste for what it's like to be on the receiving end of evangelism. You can see why people say, "It's OK for you, but why do I need Jesus? My life is fine as is." Sort of makes you realize you'd better have a good answer for that, doesn't it?
Another angle on this is peer pressure, esp. for teenagers who are so vulnerable to the influence of peers. Imagine everyone around you talking about one thing all the time, with almost everyone you know encouraging you to join in.
John Ankerberg wrote a book called "What Can Be Found in LOST," which I've always wanted to read because what a great conversation starter with a LOST fan about spiritual issues in the show. That would be a very natural way to end up sharing why Jesus is relevant to our "island."
Great analogy - it was real nice of the producers and writers to entitle the show 'Lost' to fit the scriptures so well :) I used to watch Lost in the beginning because my husband was hooked, but I lost interest after the whole "should we keep pushing the button" thing. I was just like - let it go, see what happens. At least someone might notice it and realize that's where you all were trapped, Gilligan.
You are not alone! I do not watch LOST either. I tried the first season, but I quickly found myself LOST!

I am a fan of LOST too! But I'll tell you..I was LOST when I watched it this week...they knew what they were doing when they titled this show..hopefully it will "click" for me next week!
We do need to be finding the Lost people though..and bring them home :-)

I've watched LOST a couple of times, but that's where it ends. I totally know what you mean about people who watch it though--they really love it! :) And I love how you related that to Jesus.
I always think it's so bizarre that it is socially acceptable for people to get insane over pop stars, TV shows, video games, etc., but if anyone acts that crazy over Jesus they are labeled as a crazy person.
I saw Lost when it first came out. Then I missed some episodes and I was lost trying to follow it after that. 2nd cup of coffee had some interesting thoughts on the natural vs. the spiritual. Maybe our lives are to be the FOUND episodes!
We all lose ourselves to worldly things....and we often find each other through these same things. But, it's true, Jesus would rather we lose our lives completely for Him than to be caught up in worldly stuff.
Whether we're LOST or IDOL, He can still find us and use us.
I shudder to think about the next wave of "reality" coming.
Maybe they need to produce a Left Behind TV series...based on that "popular" book, The Revelation of Jesus Christ. Let's not be so LOST or IDOL that we miss that one-time special!

Luke 15:10--One of my favorites!
As silly as the show is...hubby and I watched it religiously the first two years...it does send a message to those in the world who are looking, seeking, and needing Him. I would suggest that you watch it during the summer!

Seriously, my world would not come to an end if LOST were cancelled or if I missed an episode. (There's always Full Episode Player). I really would be more than happy to answer a call from a friend or take my kids to the er, if they REALLY needed it during the show. I enjoy the show and was really talking tongue-in-cheek, especially to my kids, about not interrupting during my 'me' time.
I do agree with Lidna that sometimes we fail to be contagious Christians by pushing our own agendas and counting numbers instead of true victories. Truth be said, there are spiritual implications in every single thing around us that captures our interest. We just have to be careful about which spirits and what they are implicating :-). I think the creators and writers of LOST have intentionally made it a point to engage Christians, and to make us all think. There are blogs and message boards galore that abound with people chiming in with ideas and suppositions. As for me, I am a puzzle girl. I love the intrigue in figuring things out. Twists and turns and GOTCHA moments really please me. There is a lot to try to decipher and figure out when watching LOST and I consider it a healthy mental exercise. I really am not as obsessed as I appear to be (even to me, after re-reading, I did come across as over the top).
American Idol is for me what LOST is for you. I just don't see the big deal. I sometimes watch it, especially in the beginning auditions, but have never voted. I find it ironic that in biblical times (and the not-to distant past as well) the words idol, idolatry and the like were considered sins and yet, the American culture has latched on to Idol as the best thing since sliced bread. And it doesn't end with LOST or American Idol or 24...the list goes on and on. We really need to be careful here. We serve a jealous God.
I tend to be an all-in kind of person. I am slow and reluctant to commit, but once I do, I'm there. T.H.E.R.E. I feel that anything that would detract from my walk, anything that would lead someone who is not a believer to question the authenticity of my faith, needs to be eliminated from my life. I work with youth, and in this post-modern (wow--I really intensely dislike that little phrase) world, like it or not we need to be aware and alert and oriented as to what is going in both the seen and unseen parts of this world. We are advised in scripture to live in this world, but not to be of this world. This is both one of my highest goals and one of my biggest struggles. I have never, ever looked into the eyes of someone who Jesus didn't die for, too. I have never met someone who was bullied or argued or harangued into salvation. I will do my part by loving them and pursuing a relationship with them and then by pointing them to the Almighty, Sovereign, King of All Kings. He's the one who can handle the conversion part.
Thank you for this great post--it made me re-examine my motives and myself. And this is pretty much a blog instead of just a comment...sorry about that!

Don't know if I will continue to watch anymore of it.
I do like American Idol, they have some great singers this year, this may be the year that will really knock some socks off, don't ya think.

I have to admit I like the show Lost. I don't watch much TV but I do watch Lost. It was 2 hours this week. My mom called right after the first hour, so we chatted and I missed a 1/2 hour. It didn't really matter as I was thinking when watching it, I am really lost now. I do like American Idol, but I have a small group at church on Tues. so that takes preference over Idol. I know I am not lost in my spiritual life, I found God!
Well, Kelly, I've never seen LOST either. But like you, I've met many lost people. From your comments here, it seems like more people don't watch it.

I am lost on Lost, although Rod and I watched the first couple seasons on DVD when we were sick with the flu once.
The high fever probably didn't help us with the comprehension difficulties.

I think I watched LOST a couple times, but then lost interest in it. My show WAS American Idol. I would be glued to my TV for the entire time, and my family KNEW NOT to talk to me or ask questions or even breathe anywhere near me. I thought it was ok because it really was the only show I'd ever watch.
"Come on guys, I deserve 1 hour to myself, no interruptions, no matter what!!!!!"
Let's just say, I don't watch too much TV anymore. It became an idol in my life, and anytime I make my family walk on eggshells around me because of my "issues", it becomes God's issue really quick.
I'm so proud of myself because I've only watched 10 minutes of IDOL this year, and it wasn't even enough to capture my attention:) Praise God!

I have watched about 3 or 4 shows (not seasons! shows) If I had time I could probably get hooked on it, but I really watch very little tv - ER, American Idol, Heroes, and a lot of History Channel stuff - I know, pretty boring:-)
I never saw LOST but CAN understand where the LOST fans are coming from.
The shows change but there is almost always one that you feel like you just HAVE to watch it.

I was one step off then too as I was an avid Knots Landing fan while everyone else was loving to loathe JR Ewing.

Well I've never seen LOST either, so I guess I am in the minority. Though I will admit I have heard tidbits about the show and they have never been enough to entice me to try to set a timer to record the show. Now Criminal Minds and I'm slowly starting to enjoy the Mentalist they are more my style.
As another "holdout" I totally loved this!
And yes, I like you, I really like you! LOL
