Honestly, I'd never heard of Rick & Bubba when I ordered this book from Thomas Nelson to review. What I was expecting was a really funny book on marriage. I love humor! But not the kind in this book.
Rick & Bubba are evidently syndicated radio personalities who used that huge platform to become authors, and New York Times best sellers at that. The book's humor was very "redneck." Lots of hunting and fishing jokes, and even a couple of "pull my finger" references were made. Women of course always get lost, and have to be apologized to for everything, even the dog tracking mud in the house while the man is at work.
Honestly, I gave up about 1/2 way through the book. But then, I decided to finish it in good conscience so I could review it, and order another book. I don't know if I had lowered my expectations, or if the book got better in the second half, but something happened.
The chapters on respect, date night, and protecting your mates honor from negative friends resonated with me. And the chapter on surviving the loss of a child (which Rick & his wife did) brought me to another level of respect for him.
The truth is, this isn't my kind of book. But Rick & Bubba seem to be good Christian men who wrote a book that will probably be enjoyable for the folks that listen to their radio show and enjoy it. My best wishes to them both, and my sincere condolences to Rick and Sherri on the loss of their son.

Maybe it is more of a "guy" book...especially with the "pull my finger" references. Glad you decided to finish it and give it a complete review.
I always appreciate an author's vulnerability...and it seems like some of that came through from these authors.
Good for you for following through and finishing it. Glad the 2nd half was a bit more interesting.
I, obviously, like humor. However, I never got into that kind either.
On the other hand, to go through something as tragic as losing a child and sharing it with the world that you can continue with life and still keep your faith is a great lesson.

I found humor in just looking at the cover. Somehow, such a frilly looking cover - when coupled with "Rick & Bubba" - just makes me laugh! *grin*
You're the second blogger I've read who reviewed this book; she said it was good, though, but I agree with Sharon -- it's probably more of a "guy" book.
I know all about Rick and Bubba as I used to listen to a station that played their radio show. I personally don't care for their humor but to each his own. I too am sorry or Rick and his wife's loss. I don't know if I could go through that. I am about crushed when mine get sick.
I've wondered about their books. I have this one on my Kindle as a free sample. I think I'll pass being's I feel I've learned everything here but good to know there was more meat in there somewhere in the text. I wonder who the ghost writer was? One of their wives perhaps?

There sure is a whole lot of different people in this ole world. I'm with you...not my sense of humor either. I'm glad you were able to take the little nuggets you found and share them. We humans sure are a varied bunch aren't we... which kinda makes me wonder about God's sense of humor.
