Dream or Vision?

I rarely remember my dreams. I sleep soundly at night, waking up refreshed with no memory of having dreamed.

Do you think God still talks to us in dreams, as he did so many times in the Bible? Joseph (of the colored coat fame), Solomon and Joseph (earthly father of Jesus) were all spoken to in dreams.

As I walked into my garage the other day, I glanced over at the flower pots pictured with this post. These are my flower pots, the painted ones decorated by my preschooler's class. The others, just pots I've used and have in the garage waiting to be used again. But as I saw them, the dream I had the night before came flooding back into my head.

In the dream, I held a pot of dry soil. I was trying to water the soil, but it was so dry, the water wouldn't go into the soil, it just filled the pot and ran over it, not sinking in. As the dream flashed in my brain, I thought the pot with the dry soil represented a person. And of course Jesus is the water, the Living Water, pouring into someone, but just running over the sides, not sinking in. Could Jesus be speaking to me? What could the Holy Spirit be revealing to me?

Am I the pot? My heart can be hard. It's been a reasonable and appropriate safety net for me over the years of my childhood to protect me from more pain. Am I becoming hard hearted to the Word of God?

Is the pot someone to whom I am witnessing? Someone who is not getting the message that I am desparately trying to give them? I don't know the answers to this, but I am thinking about it. And praying for answers.

Do you think it was "just" a dream, or vision? What do you think it meant?

Matthew 13:3-9 -- Then he {Jesus} told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear."

I do believe God still speaks through dreams when He wills. As you ask Him to reveal any message to you through this dream, He will. The dream also reminds me of the parables in Matthew 13 and Mark 4.

Thank you for sharing this. We all can pray for our hearts to be fertile, rich soil so we receive His Word, with deep roots growing, to bear much fruit for His glory!

Happy tilling!

I do believe that God speaks to us in dreams. I sometimes have dreams that I know must have some deep meaning but I can't figure them out. I blame it on not being pure enough to understand the meaning. I could think of several meanings for your dream. It could be all about giving or possibly teaching. Whatever it is, I am sure it is something positive.

Act 2:17 "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams."

It must have been a vision, because you certainly are young. :)

God is speaking, so let us know when you find out what He's saying to you.

You know, in the OT it was customary for one person to dream and another person to interpret the dream.

Have a great Monday! I'm glad God still speaks to His children.

Love,
Sonya Lee

Kelly,
God definitely still speaks to us in dreams. He chooses to speak with me through dreams frequently. I will be praying today to see if the Lord will grant an interpretation. If I get anything I'll e-mail you.

Today we are leaving my sister's house (in Michigan) to house-sit for some friends closer to the movie set. Filming begins Wednesday!

(((Hugs)))

I rarely remember my dreams either.

I cannot believe for a second that you are the hard soil that is unrelenting to accept the water.

I do know, quite personally, a pretty hard soiled person (not saying pretty, hard soiled haha) that you have been witnessing to very passionately. Perhaps that person needs a shovel upside her head.

Have a wonderful day!

Kelly,

What a moving and thought provoking post. I, too struggle sometimes b/c of the past...protecting my heart (keeping it closed). You reminded me today..it is not my job to harden my heart in protection. I am to be GOD's living vessel..it is HIS job to protect my heart.
Blessings, andrea

I had to laugh when I read your title. God has to use a 2x4 to get my attention sometimes. Growing up in churches that feared "wild fire" or false spiritual happenings I became overprotective of how God speaks.

God is God and He can talk to HIs children any way He wants to. I personally imagine we miss many of His first nudgings; and He must use louder message means. I recall with my children I would use all my parental wisdom to calmly point out something to my children but when that didn't work my voice would change and the count would begin. I would imagine my grown chidlren would come to attention if I began a count of 1.2...

I love your photo and your word picture. Stoney hearts and hard of hearing believers come to mind as I read the verse and your post. I pray often to stay attuned to Heaven and be earthly practical. Over and over the Bible warns us of ignoring God's callings and the resultant hard heart and hardened hearing.

YOu always deliver, great one.

I believe God speaks to us in dreams. I have very vivid dreams sometimes and you just know he was trying to give you a message.

This scripture from Matthew is what I've been teaching in Sunday School during the month of June!

You know, I had never pondered your question before! Guess I just thougth it was for those living in the Bible times! Silly me! I loved the responses from the other readers! Hmmm...need to ponder this one!

And, I agree with your sister :), you do not have the hard, dry, and unfertile soil. God can and is using you to sow His Word!!

Hugs,
Susan

I believe that God speaks to us through whatever method He chooses, including dreams. This certainly has the makings of a vision.

I believe that if God has given a message then He will also reveal the meaning. Keep praying about it and bring your questions to Him.

Would love to know what He reveals if it is appropriate for you to share it.

Interesting dream and for sure God speaks to us in dreams... I am not sure what your dream meant but it sure has me thinking about some stuff in my own life... thanks!!

I'm quite certain that the Lord uses dreams to communicate with us.

Pray for answers and reflect. The meaning will come to you.

CK,

Certainly, the Lord still speaks to us through dreams and visions! I think that He first speaks to us through His Word, of course, but I do think that He still uses dreams and visions to communicate His heart to us.

Hmm. Very thought provoking post. Even though I do believe God speaks through dreams sometimes, I don't know if it always is happenin'. My dreams are so weird. A combobulation of things I saw or talked about or thought of during the day sometimes all mish mashed into a horrifying mess of a dream. So, I don't know about those kind.

But I think your dream may definately be the Lord speaking to you and you will probably figure it out sooner or later. Then you can blog it for us and that will be edifying to all.

I liked your comment on Greg's last post, I just read it before buzzing over here for a read.

Kelly, I hardly ever remember my dreams either. But, I most definitely think that your dream has spiritual significance. And I believe that God desires to let us know what they mean. Ask and ye shall receive.

Thank you for sharing this...very interesting and I do think God does speak to us in many ways still today...there are many dreams that I have that afterward leave me asking and praying...

That is one deep dream! I have to say that when I have dreams like this, I can be rather skeptical. I don't want to mess up and believe it was God if it wasn't. Hhmmm...maybe I could use some more faith?

Kelly, I don't know whether your dream was just a dream, or a true vision from God. But it clearly has you thinking and doing some self-examination and to that extent, I am certain God is using the dream for your good and His glory.
So whether it was a dream or a vision, keep allowing your heart to be sensitive to His lead, and the soil will soak up the water.
Love you, friend!

I also sincerely believe that God still speaks through dreams. I laughed so hard at ADHD's comment. You two are a real pair. : )

I absolutely think God still speaks in visions and dreams. I think it's our job to seek Him for the meaning of them.

Oh may our hearts be good soil!

I believe God speaks to us in many ways...why not a dream about a flower pot? It's an encouraging dream to me. It means God is still pouring out His Word and Spirit on us.

He is so faithful even when we're a little slow and hesitant to apply His Word to our lives. I think many christians are struggling to find their way in this life. I also think that can be a good thing. God help us if we ever stop looking for His truth!!

Thanks for sharing!
