I only have a 2 year old, but I think establishing good communication as early as possible is important. We live in a world where our kids will most likely lose their precious innocence quicker than we want. Establishing communication where things are talked about in honest, loving ways will help keep that communication open when they start school and start hearing things or learning things we may not agree with. I have accepted that once my daughter is in school, I will not be able to shelter and protect her little mind or heart, but I can definitely establish a relationship with her that will allow her to feel she can come to me with questions or comments about those things that she has heard said, or things that have hurt her.
Kelly, my best advice is to be intentional about our children's time. Create a strong sense of family purpose and unity, and then treat time as your greatest asset. It seems to me that when it comes to the discipleship of the next generation we must take back stolen time. There is only 24 hours in a day - how much of that time is spent being intentional about connecting and influencing the ones we cherish the most? What a great question Kelly, I hope your well.
I know what it would have been if I hadn't had my children first.....my advise would have been to follow my sister's example
Don't let fear drive your parenting. Fear of making a mistake. Fear of your kids making a mistake. Fears of rebellion. Let faith that God will take care of you and your kids rule over any fear you might have. Increase your own faith in order to defeat any fear and in order to become your best as a parent and individual.
Aw, thanks sis!
Great answer, Mark. I love seeing your posts running with your son, spending time with your family. You are a great dad, and it shows. God bless!
Wise words Kathryn. Communication is key.
Kari - your answer applies to life, not just parenting! And absolutely do I rely on God to fill the gaps I leave in my parenting. I have faith that he will, so I don't fear my mistakes. Because we all make them. But HE redeems them. Thanks.
Well yay for you!!!!!!! And great advice!
Hugs,
Sharon
